Inventory
Can QuickBooks track lot numbers, locations, and assemblies?
Three inventory questions come up again and again, and for QuickBooks Online the answer to each is some version of no, or only in a different Intuit product.
The short answer
No, not in QuickBooks® Online. As of October 31, 2026, Plus and Advanced don’t track lot or serial numbers or count stock by location. Their locations are a reporting tag. They don’t build assemblies either. Intuit sells these in QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise Platinum and Diamond, which include Advanced Inventory. Check this before you commit.

Which QuickBooks tracks lot numbers, locations and assemblies?
Only QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise Platinum or Diamond, with Advanced Inventory turned on, does all three. QuickBooks Online Plus and Advanced do none of them. US products, from Intuit’s help pages checked October 31, 2026:
| Product or plan | Lot or serial numbers | Expiry dates | Stock counted by site | Assemblies and bills of materials |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| QuickBooks Online Plus or Advanced | Not offered | Not offered | Not offered; locations are a reporting tag | Not offered; bundles don’t track quantity |
| Desktop Premier Plus (no longer sold to new US subscribers) | Not offered | Not offered | Not offered | Yes, build assemblies |
| Desktop Enterprise Gold | Not offered | Not offered | Not offered | Yes, build assemblies |
| Desktop Enterprise Platinum or Diamond, Advanced Inventory on | Yes, serial or lot (one type per file) | Yes, in the 2023 and 2024 versions | Yes, multiple sites with transfers | Yes, build assemblies |
Lot, serial, expiry and per-site stock all come from Advanced Inventory, which Intuit includes in Desktop Enterprise Platinum and Diamond only. Assemblies come with Desktop Premier, Enterprise and Accountant.
Intuit Enterprise Suite has manufacturing orders built on a bill of materials. Intuit’s help pages don’t describe lot, serial or per-site tracking for it.
There is a fourth question, and it has its own page: which costing method QuickBooks uses, and why you cannot change it later.
Can QuickBooks track lot and serial numbers?
Lot tracking follows a batch of goods. Intuit says it suits items you buy in batches, especially when you may need a recall report that traces items and buyers. Serial tracking follows single units, for warranty claims or knowing which customer bought each one.
QuickBooks Online did not list serial-number, lot, or expiry-date tracking on any plan when reviewed on October 31, 2026. Intuit offers them in QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise, on the Platinum and Diamond tiers, once Advanced Inventory is turned on. You pick serial numbers or lot numbers for the file, not both, and you can pair either one with expiry dates. On QuickBooks Online, that tracking has to live outside the books, in a spreadsheet or another app.
Can QuickBooks Online track inventory by location?
There is a difference between tagging a transaction with a location for reporting and knowing how many units sit at each site. A business with more than one warehouse or store usually needs the second, so it can answer “do we have it in stock here?” and not just “which location did this sale belong to?”
QuickBooks Online’s location tracking, on Plus and Advanced only, is the first kind. Intuit describes it as a way to sort your records by office, region, outlet or department. Intuit’s inventory article describes a quantity on hand for each product, which goes down by the amount on each invoice or sales receipt, and doesn’t mention sites.
Desktop Enterprise Platinum and Diamond, with Advanced Inventory, manage stock across multiple inventory sites. You can transfer stock between them, run cycle counts, and use pick, pack and ship.
Does QuickBooks Online do assemblies or bills of materials?
If you buy parts and sell finished goods, the software has to turn components into a product, draw down the parts and cost the finished item. That is an assembly, and the list of parts is a bill of materials.
QuickBooks Online did not include assemblies or bills of materials when reviewed on October 31, 2026. Its bundles group items on a sales form, and Intuit says QuickBooks won’t track quantities for them.
Intuit offers assemblies in QuickBooks Desktop Premier, Enterprise and Accountant. Each build lowers the stock of the parts it uses. In Intuit Enterprise Suite, a manufacturing order needs a bill of materials, and marking the build complete posts the accounting entries. Intuit says Enterprise Suite doesn’t support multi-level bills of materials with sub-assemblies.
What should a growing inventory business do?
None of this matters for a service business or a shop with simple stock. It matters a great deal for a business whose whole operation is moving physical goods. The features you need but don’t have end up in spreadsheets and add-on apps.
Before you commit, ask whether it does the inventory your business needs, on the plan you want. If the answer is no, it’s better to know now than after a year of data.
If Desktop is where Intuit points you, read whether Desktop is being discontinued before you move toward it. Intuit stopped selling Premier Plus to new US subscribers after September 30, 2024, and Enterprise is still sold. For what lot tracking, per-site stock, and assemblies look like in a cloud tool, see the inventory section of the product page.
Frequently asked questions
Does QuickBooks Online track lot or serial numbers?

Can QuickBooks Online track stock by location?
Not as a quantity. Location tracking on Plus and Advanced sorts your records by office, region, outlet or department, and Intuit’s inventory article describes quantity on hand per product with no mention of sites. Desktop Enterprise Platinum and Diamond, with Advanced Inventory, manage stock across multiple inventory sites.
Does QuickBooks Online support assemblies or bills of materials?
No. Its bundles group items on a sales form, and Intuit says QuickBooks won’t track quantities for them. Intuit offers assemblies in QuickBooks Desktop Premier, Enterprise and Accountant, and manufacturing orders with a bill of materials in Intuit Enterprise Suite.
Which QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise plans include Advanced Inventory?
Platinum and Diamond. Intuit says Advanced Inventory is included in those two subscriptions only, so Gold doesn’t have it. Advanced Inventory adds serial or lot numbers, expiry dates, multiple inventory sites with transfers, cycle counts, and pick, pack and ship.
Can I still buy QuickBooks Desktop Premier to get assemblies?
Not as a new US customer. Intuit stopped selling Pro Plus, Premier Plus and Mac Plus to new US subscribers after September 30, 2024, though existing subscribers can still renew. Enterprise is still sold, and Intuit lists assemblies in Enterprise.
