Is QuickBooks Desktop being discontinued?

Intuit has stopped selling some Desktop editions to new customers, but what it means for you depends on which edition you run and whether you are a new or existing customer.

The short answer

Partly. Since October 1, 2024, new US customers can only buy QuickBooks® Desktop Enterprise. The 2023 versions lost their connected services after May 31, 2026. Keep renewing and your file keeps working. If your Desktop Plus subscription ends, Intuit gives you 12 months of view-only access, and you can export your data.

Which QuickBooks Desktop editions are being discontinued?

Enterprise is the only Desktop edition a new US customer can buy. Intuit has set no end date for the 2024 versions of Pro Plus, Premier Plus and Enterprise. The 2023 versions lost their connected services after May 31, 2026. US products only, checked against Intuit’s own pages on October 31, 2026.

Desktop Enhanced Payroll stopped selling to new US customers on the same date. The accountant editions, Premier Accountant Edition Plus 2023 and Enterprise Accountant 23.0, were discontinued with the other 2023 versions.

For the 2024 versions, Intuit said in September 2026 that they won’t be discontinued in May 2027. It is moving away from the three-year lifecycle it used before. In its words, “There’s no sunset deadline for this release,” and it will keep version 24.0 up to date for years to come. If any date here has moved by the time you read this, Intuit’s page is the source of record.

If you’re choosing between the two products rather than tracking dates, QuickBooks Online vs Desktop compares them side by side.

What does “discontinued” mean for QuickBooks Desktop?

People use the word for three different things, and they aren’t equally serious.

  • An edition stops being sold to new customers. You can’t buy it, but everyone already on it can keep renewing. This is what happened to Pro Plus, Premier Plus and Mac Plus.
  • A year’s version is discontinued. On a set date it loses live support, security updates and connected services like payroll and bank feeds. This is the one that changes how you work.
  • Your own subscription ends. You can’t edit your books anymore. Intuit gives Desktop Plus for Windows, 2023 R3 or newer, and Mac Plus 2024 or newer, 12 months of view-only access, and you can export your data.

So “is Desktop discontinued?” is really several questions. The useful ones are which of these applies to your edition, and when.

What has Intuit said about the future of QuickBooks Desktop?

Here is what Intuit’s help articles say. It stopped selling Pro Plus, Premier Plus and Mac Plus to new US customers after September 30, 2024. It still sells Enterprise. And in September 2026 it dropped the three-year lifecycle for the 2024 versions, saying there is no sunset deadline and that it will keep version 24.0 up to date for years to come.

Its annual report shows the size of each business. In the year to July 31, 2026, Intuit’s online business brought in $9.9 billion, more than three times its desktop business, and grew three times as fast.

Intuit’s Online Ecosystem and Desktop Ecosystem revenue compared, fiscal 2025 and fiscal 2026, from Intuit’s 10-K
Intuit businessFiscal 2025 revenue (USD millions)Fiscal 2026 revenue (USD millions)Growth (%)
Online Ecosystem$8,302$9,91819
Desktop Ecosystem$2,775$2,9466

Intuit’s fiscal year ends July 31. In its 10-K, Intuit says the desktop increase “was due to higher effective prices.” Desktop is still a $2.9 billion business that Intuit says it will keep up to date. What’s left for you to decide is timing.

What happens if I stay on QuickBooks Desktop?

If you’re on Pro Plus, Premier Plus or Enterprise 2024 and keep renewing, you carry on. Intuit says it will keep that version up to date. Intuit’s list of what a discontinued version loses doesn’t include your data. It’s the services around it: security updates, live support, payroll tax calculations, payment processing and bank downloads.

A few things are worth watching:

  • A renewal price that rises. Intuit says desktop revenue grew on higher effective prices.
  • Payroll or bank feeds going dark because your year’s version aged out of support.
  • An older version, like 2023, that already lost its connected services.

None of these is an emergency on its own. Together they are why people start looking around.

What does moving off QuickBooks Desktop involve?

Moving is mostly bringing your history across, checking that the opening balances match, and getting comfortable in the new place before you rely on it. A good migration carries your chart of accounts, customers, vendors and past transactions, so you aren’t starting from an empty file.

Two things are worth doing before you switch. Run one clean month in both the old and new system so you can compare the numbers. And pick a natural cutover point, such as the start of a quarter or a year, so your reporting has a clean line.

Each route out, from Intuit’s own tool to Xero’s conversion partner, with how much history it brings and how long you have, is in leaving QuickBooks Desktop. What comes across in a switch to Imprest, and what does not, is laid out on the switch page.

Should you move off QuickBooks Desktop now?

Not out of panic. Desktop discontinuation is a planning event, not a deadline that erases your books. But there are natural moments to weigh a move:

  • Your version is losing support and you would have to upgrade.
  • Your renewal price jumped and the value no longer adds up.
  • You want your books somewhere you can reach from a browser, and let your accountant into the same file without emailing a copy around.
  • You are already changing something big, like adding payroll or a new location, and would rather set it up once in the right place.

If none of those is true, staying put another year is a perfectly good answer. If one or two are, it is worth seeing what the cloud looks like before your hand is forced. If you’re weighing the cloud products against each other, the Xero vs QuickBooks comparison covers where each one is stronger, and QuickBooks Online pricing in 2026 shows what each plan costs.

If price is the thing that moved, the pricing page puts QuickBooks Online and Desktop list prices side by side.
